A Shocking Loss

But there is some pain you just have to go through.

On July 4, 1960, my father had a heart attack while playing golf with my mother. He was rushed to the hospital. He recovered well enough for everyone to think his condition wasn’t that serious. Even my mother felt comfortable enough to leave his bedside. It therefore came as a big shock to her—and to all of us—when he died later than night. He was only fifty-six.

My mother was inconsolable afterward. It was awful. I had just had a baby, but I was the one who had to call my uncle to tell him that his brother had died. I also had to call my uncle Tom.

I missed my father terribly. As we made his funeral arrangements, my younger sister told me that I was my father’s favorite. I didn’t contradict her. I actually thought she was right: I was his favorite. I didn’t know why. Maybe because I was the first girl? I was in high school by the time my sister was born. She was only five years old when I got married. I had the advantage of knowing our father longer than she had. And for the blessing of those years I am truly thankful.
